Driving always carries a certain amount of risk, even under the best of circumstances. Even when the road is visibly clear, and the driver is alert - mobile phones and points of interest can cause distraction and this leads to sometimes fatal accidents. According to statistics from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), two in every ten crashes involve driver fatigue*.
MiX Telematics, in partnership with Seeing Machines, has developed an integrated driver fatigue monitoring system called Guardian. It offers advanced sensing technology and uses patented detection algorithms to recognise signs of inattention and fatigue by tracking a driver’s face, eyes and eyelids.
Once one or more of these signs have been detected, the system signals the driver by either generating an in-cab sound or activating seat vibrators or both. These actions have been proven to bring drivers back to an alert state, helping to ensure that they arrive safely at their destination, trip after trip.
The Guardian system’s innovative cameras have the ability to recognise signs of inattention and fatigue even at night and when glasses are being worn so nothing goes unseen.
